Speedy's Road to recovery: Dressing Change day

So Speedy had his dressing changed today. I have no idea what it looks like as with covid restrictions I'm not allowed in with him. Apparently there was some puss that had to be cleaned out so we were told Speedy needed to have his dressings changed 3 times a week. Todays was supposed to be included with the bill on Monday so I was expecting just the bill for a new bottle of meloxicam....only to be shocked to have to pay for todays visit so £306 pounds on Monday and another £56 today! To say I wasn't happy is putting it mildly especially as the abscess was misdiagnosed for 10 months and in my mind that should never have happened, Speedy should never have had to suffer with a growing abscess for that long.

Quite Frankly nearly £100 a week to have his dressings changed after the vets mistake is a hard pill to swallow so after a slightly heated conversation about it Speedy's treatment has changed. Friday the Dressing will be taken off and I will clean the wound myself with Vetericyn everyday and left to heal naturally open to the air. I have antibiotic solution here at the house which is used on rabbits and small animals and I have Manuka honey too. If it looks like the paw needs a light dressing I'll do it myself and use the antibiotic solution and Manuka Honey with the dressing and then Speedy will have the occasional check ups as he needs its.

I'm not going against the vet advice but I just can't afford £100 pounds a week on vet bills when I know I am capable of cleaning the wound and dressing it myself. Also I pick up on problems far quicker than any vet can and so can his dad and we don't make mistakes.

As For Speedy well today he is a lot brighter and a lot happier much more like himself and he is fully eating on his own now. I'll do an update on Friday after the Dressing is removed and then we can all see what we are dealing with....I'm sure it won't be pretty so if you're squeamish you might not want to see that one. Keep your Fingers crossed for my boy, You're all amazing with all your Messages that you have sent....Bless you all!

  1. That's just awful. We hate when unexpected finances are piled on top of already stressful issues. Poor Speedy, too, as he's the one who has the physical pain. Sending super powerful healing vibes. Love, Noodle

  3. Vet bills are the absolute pits :-( And the v.e.t. missing the diagnosis - awful. Did they say what caused the abscess to develop in the first place? Glad you're feeling better though.

  7. Rachel! We are so furry happy that Speedy is doing better. He has been a part of my life for so long, I feel like he is one of my nieces or nephews. I can't believe they (the @#%# Vet) did not pick up on the abscess and agree wholeheartedly with your direction. You know Speedy and probably know more about bunny care than most vets. I send you love, virtual hugs, all my support and strength!

  9. That is really too bad. When Angel Phantom had that tumor on his tail that was removed but took a long time to close, our vet never charged us for subsequent visits to clean the wound and rebandage. We are sure you can and will do a very good job for Speedy. All paws crossed for our favorite bunny.

  10. I am sorry to hear of Speedy's abscess. I agree that the vet should have recognised it much earlier. The pricing is outrageous. Most vets are now owned by a countrywide company that certainly knows how to charge. There are still a few privately owned practices, but they are few and far between. I hope he makes a good recovery.

  11. Mum and I are in agreement that they should not charge SO much and that it was because of their mistake that poor Speedy had so much trouble.
Good thing you can(and probably do better) see to his foot.
    Purrs he recovers soon!!!

  12. You did the right thing with the vet. It was through their negligence that Speedy is in this position and they should be willing to accommodate you and compensate you financially for their misdiagnosis. We are keeping our paws crossed for him.

  13. I'm glad Speedy is feeling better, and sheesh! You should be able to take care of the dressings yourself instead of paying so much. After the vet's lengthy misdiagnosis, I can't say I trust them much.

  15. And vets wonder why people think that they are just in it for the money. Not all vets are the same. Sending healing thoughts.

  18. That's a ridiculous amount of money to have to pay, especially for the vet's mistake. And you are right: a pet's family can usually see the problems sooner than a doctor can; Josie's veterinary said that very thing when I took her in for her last visit yesterday. The best of luck to Speedy in his recovery.
