There Seems to be an increase in the practice of dyed Bunny's....and "How Cute and Adorable" it makes us look...some people even think it's "Cool".But it's not cool or cute in fact it's a dangerous health risk to us bunny's and here is why this craze needs to be stopped....
Over to you mummy:
The first this is bathing Bunnies...it shouldn't be done except for cleaning the bottom to remove feces or urine to stop urine scald because the rabbit has a disability or is unwell and unable to clean itself and the occasional spot cleaning.Rabbits are prey animals and are easily frightened and stressed by bathing and they really don't like getting wet.....Speedy doesn't even like getting his paws wet never mind being out in the rain.I have had to clean his bottom on occasion when he was overweight and every time he has always struggled and tried to bite me and when he had stasis and kept having diarrhea it got all over him and that meant a bath in shallow warm water to clean him up...I didn't have a choice.Situations like that are the only time you would bathe a rabbit.
Now lets talk about the dyes. There are several pet safe dyes on the market now you would think well pet safe they are ok aren't they? Wrong Pet safe dyes contain Biocides which are highly toxic to rabbits. They are safe for dogs but not Rabbits. Some also contain other ingredient which are irritants
This is the ingredient list for Opaws dyes:
Aqua, Glycerin, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil,Hydroxyethylcellulose, Polyquaternium-10, CI 42090, CI 15985, CI 19140, CI 16035, Methylchloroisothiazolinone Methylisothiazolinone
only the pigments numbers change on the list on the different colours. The last one is the Biocide which is Toxic to rabbits.
This is the list for Top performance pet dyes:
Purified water,CTFA- approved pigments and dyes, cellulose thickener,Glycerine and preservative
Doesn't give you much info does it what are the pigments and dyes and what preservative is used?Is it the same biocide as the one used in Opaws?
Then there are the vegan hair dyes like Manic panic
There are some dog groomers in the USA that are prepared to use dyes on rabbits and in most states in the USA it is banned on dogs but not in all and it's not banned in the UK
Ok Speedy back to you now:
So would you use these on a rabbit?I know my mummy wouldn't because why would you use something that at the very least is an irritant that could be ingested by the rabbit while it is grooming itself putting their sensitive digestive systems at risk? These products are not listed as safe for rabbits and there is a reason for that because they are not.
So which would you rather see a rabbit like those above or like me in my natural fur?
Note from Mummy:
All the information written is readily available on the internet but does not cover every product on the market just some examples of what is available to purchase. These products are listed as Non toxic and are vegetable based dyes and are safe for use on dogs. They are not listed as safe for rabbits or cats or any other small animal pet. There may be other products out there that are safe for cats but I did not find any.If these products are used as they were intended for then they are perfectly safe. These Dyes should only be use on the animals that they were created for or the Humans that they were created for.

I just don't see the reason. If you want to color a rabbit, get a stuffie and play with that.
ReplyDeleteyou're so right Bailey,xx Speedy
DeleteUh well Ig I won’t do this but I just wanted to dye my bunny white for Easter to look like the Easter bunny
DeleteWe think it is STUPID to want to Color Bunnies or CHICKS either... in this country the practice of SELLING Colored Chicks and Bunnies was Banned Years ago...
ReplyDeleteYOU are BEAUTIFUL/HANDSOME JUST THE WAY YOU ARE.. an we Know YOUR MUM would NEVER EVER do such a thingy to YOU...
We just HOPE that OTHERS will be like her... and Refuse to BUY Colored Bunnies or chicks... and THAT will end the PROFIT Motive fur such a TERRIBLE Practice.
THANKS fur Putting this up, Speedy... Folks NEED TO KNOW this kind of stuffs.
What madness is this. Are humans really that dumb. Think it’s time we anipals started to rule the world. C’mon Speedy, you can be our ‘president’.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I don't understand why anyone would do this. The shelter I volunteer at had a rabbit surrendered who had been dyed green. It was permanent dye and he remained that color for his whole life - poor guy.
ReplyDeleteWell dang, pardon me but I think that deserves a full scale IDIOT ALERT!
ReplyDeleteRabbits don't need dye to be cute.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Sadako says to give kisses to Speedy ;-)
Bunnies are beautiful as they are... Do not dye them.
ReplyDeleteIf you cannot appreciate the natural beauty of something then you don't understand beauty.
I don't care for the coloring on any animals. I say don't do it. I always feel sorry for the animal when I see it online.
ReplyDeleteSue B
We think bunnies are beautiful just the way they are. Thank you for a thought provoking post.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting info. We don't like colored bunnies and we REALLY don't like colored dogs
ReplyDeleteLily & Edward
We didn't know that people were dying bunnies. We can't imagine. You buns are beautiful just the way you are. Happy you are warning people about the dangers. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
ReplyDeleteWe think it is dumb when people dye animals.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of dyeing bunnies is AWFUL!! Only a cruel, unthinking human would do such a thing. :-(
ReplyDeleteAre people that bored? Lame. Stuffed pink bunnies are cute. Live bunnies should be left with the color the good Lord gave them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info and alert. How absolutely stupid and awful to dye a bunny.
ReplyDeleteOne day I photoshopped a picture of Princess Sage Bunny to make her silver Dutchy half look green for St Patrick's Day. Oh lord, the sheep hit the fan. I spent a great deal of time assuring people nono, I would never ACTUALLY dye my bunny.
ReplyDeleteJust have to believe there's more good, caring, animal peeps out there than there are stupidheads.
Good morning Speedy and mum! THANK YOU for speaking out about this; I have seen dogs coming out of the groomers with dyed fur (especially poodles) but I had NEVER heard of rabbits being dyed until the first time you mentioned this a few days ago, and then reading the horrible ingredients that are in these dyes....I just don't understand how people can submit these dear and gentle and most vulnerable creatures to this. THANK YOU and I hope this is stopped. There are so many chemicals poisoning our food and water supply and threatening life in all ways....and so much of this nonsense is to make money.
ReplyDeleteBLESS YOU DEAR FRIENDS!
We agree - anipals need to be the colors they were born with. There are some salons in the USA that will dye your dogs still. There is NO WAY my mom/dad would do that to Houdini. XOXO - Bacon
ReplyDeleteOh wow!!! I mean, why would anyone want to cover an animal in something that could be potentially harmful to their health?! UGH!
ReplyDeleteღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Some people are really stupid. More than stupid in fact.
ReplyDeleteThey will do anything to show off.
Speedy you, and the other bunnies, look much better with your real color.

ReplyDeleteNatural bunnies! I can't believe what people will do to little creatures. Ridiculous!!
ReplyDeleteLove to you Speedy and your mum too!
You shared great information and hopefully it will convince someone to leave their rabbit (or other pets) their natural color. Personally, I don't find it cute or amusing to see animals dyed. A colorful pet safe collar, scarf, or bow is much cuter.
ReplyDeleteYou, Speedy! Definitely, I'd be ok with coloring pets if can start coloring two-foots.
ReplyDeleteNo artificial color to our pets :)
ReplyDeleteWe are all lovely the way we are, why do they need to try and make us look like cartoon characters anyway. But yes, we agree with all that your Mom said!
ReplyDelete~lickies, Ludo!
ReplyDeleteWe all agree with you Speedy and Speedy's mum
ReplyDeleteThe only rabbits fur i have ever dyed have been pelts bought from the tanners or that i have tanned myself (for reference i only hunt what im going to eat and i make use of as much of the carcass of whatever i have hunted as possible, also as part of responsible hunting i dont kill in baby season and i make sure that habitat is looked after too). As for my Rufus and Freya, I would never dye them or permit them to be dyed... they are beautiful as they are. Who the hell started dying rabbits?! I had never heard of it up untill now.
